Llansamlet is an unusual mix, and it produces an unusual mix of problems. The enterprise parks and distribution units around the village mean a large number of people spend their working day lifting, packing, loading and standing on hard floors. A few streets away, others commute into Swansea or along the M4 to a desk. Both groups end up in the same treatment room, and they arrive with almost opposite problems.
The physical working day loads the lower back, the shoulders and the hips. Repetitive lifting is the obvious one, but so is standing still for hours, which is far harder on the lower back than most people realise. Feet ache, calves tighten, and the lower back takes on a constant low level of tension that never quite resolves because the next shift starts before it has.
The desk and driving pattern is different, and it shows up higher. Holding the arms forward loads the muscles between the shoulder blades, and a long commute does the same to one side of the neck and upper back. Where someone does both, driving an hour each way to sit at a desk all day, the two patterns stack on top of each other and the upper back tends to carry the result.
What makes Llansamlet distinctive for us is that people from here often put treatment off longer than anywhere else, simply because the clinic is so close that it always feels like something that can be done next week. The problems we see from the village have usually been there a while by the time they arrive. Our first visit page explains what happens when you do come in.
