What is the infrared sauna for?

Our infrared sauna gives you a deep, comfortable sweat at the Birchgrove treatment room in Swansea, from £10 for a 30 minute session. It is a gentle, restorative way to warm the muscles, ease tension and unwind, and it works especially well before or after a deep tissue massage.

The science, in plain English

How an infrared sauna works

An infrared sauna warms your body directly, much like sunshine on your skin, rather than heating the air around you. That gives you a comfortable radiant heat and a satisfying sweat without the heavy, humid intensity of a traditional sauna.

It runs at a gentler temperature, around 43°C to 66°C, compared with roughly 66°C to 91°C for a conventional sauna, so most people find they can relax in it for a full 20 to 45 minutes.

Infrared heat is felt on the skin rather than in the air around you, which is why it feels warmer than the air in the room.

What people use it for

How a session may help

These are the reasons people come back. They are general wellness benefits rather than medical claims, and individual results vary.

Circulation and recovery

The warmth gently raises your core temperature and heart rate, which may support healthy circulation and blood flow.

Relaxation and stress relief

Radiant heat helps your body settle into its natural rest and recovery state, easing tension and leaving you calmer.

Easing muscle stiffness

Heat drawn deep into muscles and joints may help loosen stiffness, ease everyday aches and support recovery after training or activity.

Better sleep

The natural cool down after a session mirrors the body's own wind down before sleep, and many people find they drift off more easily.

Healthy skin

Better circulation and a good sweat may help skin look fresher.

Resilience

Mild heat stress prompts the body to produce heat shock proteins, which support cell repair and everyday resilience.

An easy habit

Because infrared saunas run cooler than traditional ones, sessions are comfortable to enjoy for longer, which makes regular use simple to keep up.

These are general wellness benefits rather than medical claims. Individual results vary, and this is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition.

The best way to use it

Better together with a deep tissue massage

Sauna and massage work well as a pair. A short sauna session warms and loosens the muscles, so the deep tissue work that follows may be more comfortable and more effective.

We highly recommend combining the two. Book the sauna first, and give yourself a few minutes to cool down before your appointment.

Included with every session

Bright light therapy inside the sauna

Fitted inside the sauna is a bright light therapy lamp, sometimes called a SAD lamp. It gives out around 10,000 lux of filtered light that mimics natural daylight, which can be hard to come by through the Welsh winter.

Used for around 20 to 30 minutes in the morning, bright light therapy is widely used to help ease the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, and the winter blues. Many people find it lifts mood and energy, with a steadier sleep pattern over a week or two of daily use.

It is a complementary wellness option rather than a medical treatment. If you have a diagnosed condition such as bipolar disorder, an eye condition, or you take medication that makes you more sensitive to light, please check with your GP before using it.

Before you book

Safety and who should check first

Infrared sauna use is a complementary wellness practice. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any medical condition, and individual results vary.

If you are pregnant, have a heart or blood pressure condition, or have any other health concern, please speak to a healthcare professional before your first session.

Drink water before and after, and come out if you feel light headed. The sessions are short and the heat is gentle, and there is no benefit in pushing through discomfort.

Questions

Questions we get asked

How hot does an infrared sauna get?

Gentler than a traditional sauna, around 43°C to 66°C, compared with roughly 66°C to 91°C for a conventional one. That means you can relax in it comfortably for longer.

How long is a session?

A single booking is 30 minutes. Most people find that is a comfortable length of time to settle in, sweat and come out feeling restored.

What should I wear and bring?

Bring a towel and some water. Changing and shower facilities are available at the Birchgrove treatment room, so you can head straight on with your day afterwards.

Can I combine the sauna with a massage?

Yes, and we recommend it. A sauna beforehand warms and loosens the muscles, so the deep tissue work that follows may be more comfortable and more effective.

Is the infrared sauna suitable for everyone?

Most people, but if you are pregnant, have a heart or blood pressure condition, or have any other health concern, please check with a healthcare professional before your first session.

How often can I use the infrared sauna?

As often as suits you. The membership covers three sessions a week for £30 a month, which is the most economical way to make it a regular part of your week.

The sauna sits alongside the treatments on the services page. If you are working out whether to come in, the contact page has both treatment rooms and the phone number, and our Swansea location page covers the Birchgrove room in detail.
